Krishnakumar Balasubramanian

Krishnakumar Balasubramanian (KK) is a Theatre & Film Actor, Director, Playwright, Set & Light Designer and Stunt Choreographer. He is the Artistic Director of The Little Theatre, Chennai. Since 2007 he has acted, scripted and directed in numerous critically acclaimed and commercially successful theatre productions, including 5 Christmas Pantomimes and 6 original home productions that played at the International Theatre Festival for Young Audiences (The Little Festival) by The Little Theatre. His shows played in Iran and Malaysia to standing ovations.
His productions are known for daredevil stunt sequences using free style and traditional martial arts forms and the innovative use of technology. He was selected to represent India as an Actor in an International collaboration at the 2010 ASSITEJ Korea Winter Festival of Performing Arts. His production ‘The R.E.D Bean Can’ which was critically acclaimed when it played at The Little Festival in July 2015 was selected from among more than 60 productions from various countries to play at the 22nd Theatre Festival for Children and young adults at Hamedan, Iran.


He is a member of the Global Shapers community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum (2012). He was a panelist at the World Economic Forum on India 2012 (South Asia’s Children—Are We Thinking about South Asia’s Tomorrow) with Sarah Jane Brown and Ulhas Yargop. He was voted as one of the 37 Young Indians of Tomorrow by ‘India Today’ in its 37th anniversary issue giving him the title ‘Theatre Technocrat’ 2012.
KK leads India’s first hospital clown troupe by The Little Theatre. It is an initiative to bring laughter and relief in hospitals in Chennai through clowning. The concept was introduced in Malaysia at Hospital Kuala Lumpur in Aug 2017.
In 2016 he directed the play “I am an Actor, Your Honour” written by Suhasini Manirathnam featuring YG Mahendran for the Gollapudi Awards.
He is a TEDx speaker (TEDx ChMCollege, TEDx Youth Chennai and TEDx Delhi Salon), a trained martial artist and a fitness enthusiast.
