Ana Lamata Manuel is Ph.D in History of Art (Universidad Compluense, Madrid, Spain). Her main field of research has been the conditions of visibility and representation in art, particularly focussed on the resonances between art and science. These investigations have been the subject of her Ph.D. and subsequent book, « Superrealists. X-rays and avant-garde art » as well as of several academic papers and lectures.
Her other main field of interest is the cultural history of textiles and, particularly, of headdresses, which led her to apprentice the craft of hatmaking under the guidance of Ms Rose Cory, hatmaker to the late Queen Mother of England, Queen Elizabeth, and to become a professional hatmaker as well.
